Voice Compression Maximizes Bandwidth

When Xenon Communications, a new provider of international telecommunications services to long distance carriers, was poised to begin operations, the company needed voice compression solutions to maximize the bandwidth of its satellite and wireline links. Xenon sought a provider that could offer top-notch guidance as well as quality products, service and support. "RAD worked with us on our application integration and broke down the price distribution in a way that suited our needs," says Muhammad Hafeez, Vice President and Co-founder of Xenon.

RAD enabled Xenon to provide a transport service connecting PBX systems in India, Pakistan and Nepal, which currently have only analog dial-tone type PSTNs, with a co-located full digital switching gateway in New York City. Xenon implemented RAD's CVS solution to create an access hub for connectivity. "Megaplex-2100 units connect to an E1 interface in the U.S. and Kilomux-2100 units connect to a T1 interface on the sub-continent," explains Hafeez.

"RAD offers a wide array of interfaces," adds Hafeez. "If a carrier provides something other than FXO extensions, RAD can support a digital interconnect. Whatever a country's application requirements, RAD can handle it. Their solutions are quite diverse. RAD products work in every environment, essentially. Without RAD, our solution would not have been possible."

Superior Voice Quality

The installation of RAD equipment provided cost savings for Xenon and its customers. "RAD's equipment, which is highly scalable and modular, delivered more value than their competitors would have," Hafeez says, "and is far more suitable than anyone else's for the kinds of countries to which we connect. Another benefit is high overflow capacity, which allows RAD equipment to absorb overflow traffic from major carriers while providing superior sound quality. RAD can provide more bandwidth for the money because RAD's voice compression solutions to go all the way down to 4.8 kbps."

Hafeez also notes that Xenon can continue to use RAD's Megaplex and Kilomux equipment when digital technology does penetrate the Indian sub-continent, with only a simple module change, protecting Xenon's investment.

Still another benefit is the sturdiness of RAD's products. "We had a power outage for several hours and it was over 100 degrees in the room that housed the equipment, yet it functioned flawlessly," Hafeez said. "Incredibly, the high heat did not degrade the system. We believe this is an unprecedented achievement."

Finally, with regard to service and support, Hafeez comments that RAD far exceeded Xenon's expectations. "The people at RAD go out of their way to make sure things are running smoothly for us," he says. "And if we ever have a question or concern, they can easily dial into the system and guide us through."
