Russia's economy is booming, and nowhere is this more evident than in Moscow, which has quickly established itself as one of the world's major business hubs. Naturally, demand for high-quality, high-speed communications services has grown commensurately. Comstar United TeleSystems, the leading telecom service provider in Moscow, specializes in providing high-speed voice and data services and assuring high quality Internet access for its corporate customers. Recently, they upgraded their networks to include business SHDSL services. Since reliability and quality were key concerns, they decided to deploy RAD Data Communications' Multiservice Access Platform (MAP) to integrate their voice and data services. "Our company already had extensive experience in deploying RAD equipment in a number of projects," stated Said Alimbekov, Comstar United TeleSystems' deputy director-general." Because we needed to provide SHDSL connectivity for VIP clients and integrate that technology with broadband optical networks, our cooperation with RAD was a natural step," he continued. RAD equipment is used extensively in Comstar United TeleSystems' networks for providing the most up-to-date telecommunication technologies and for meeting the demands of the digital communications market. "Throughout our relationship, RAD has shown itself to be a trusted partner and vendor of high-quality, reliable equipment," Alimbekov noted. "RAD has successfully provided post warranty services and all kinds of technical support."

The first eight sites in Moscow to be connected to the provider's network are equipped with RAD's DXC-30 and DXC-10 multiservice access nodes. Equipped with standard STM-1 interfaces, the DXC units support direct access to SDH ADM over copper or optical channels and can consolidate up to 61.44 Mbps in traffic from different channels. The two-port mode, which was implemented in Moscow, can be used for daisy chaining several devices or backup purposes. An additional element in the solution is located at the customer premises, where the provider installed RAD's FCD-IP and FCD-IPM modular access devices with integrated routers and SHDSL channels for voice and data services.

"We didn't choose RAD products arbitrarily," said Aleksey Krasnotsvetov, director of SovTel, the local RAD partner that oversaw the project. "In addition to the on-going business relationship between Comstar United TeleSystems and RAD, the determining factors in the choice were the excellent features and broad functionalities that RAD solutions feature, as well as the affordable price," Krasnotsvetov added. "RAD's solution can be fully integrated with the existing SNMP management system for remote administration, and it controls CPE devices down to the level of the ports." Comstar United TeleSystems is one of the largest Russian competitive exchange carriers. The company was founded in May 2004 as a result of the merger of Comstar, MTU-Inform and Telmos. The carrier's consolidated revenue in 2003 totaled $244 million, with a net profit of $55 million. Comstar United TeleSystems provides integrated communication services, including broadband Internet access using SDH technology, to hundreds of enterprises and organizations in Moscow and the Moscow region. Comstar United TeleSystems uses a large number of DXC multiservice access nodes and FCD-IP access devices from RAD in its network.
