BWA Carrier Solutions

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) - the exceptional last-mile access alternative.

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) has emerged as an exceptional last-mile access alternative to xDSL and Cable Modems. A BWA system offers carriers total independence from landline infrastructure’s limited reach while providing heightened bandwidth flexibility and service differentiation. It is the most viable solution for the SME (small to medium-sized enterprise), SOHO (small office, home office), MDU (multi-dwelling units) and MTU (multi-tenant units) market segments, where subscribers are demanding sophisticated data and voice services.

Broadband wireless technology promises to usher in a new age of opportunity for carriers that target these emerging business segments and significantly impacts their growth potential. BWA is extremely competitive in terms of capital and operating costs, reliability, availability and quality of services. DSL can only reach 60% of the market in advanced countries and cable’s reach is even more limited. And neither provides the bandwidth and QoS that make broadband wireless such a strong offering.

Alvarion's BreezeACCESS and WALKair solutions provide a comprehensive range of broadband wireless access applications for data and voice in licensed and unlicensed bandwidths, enabling carriers to effectively compete in a deregulated market environment where enhanced services represent the defining factor in generating new and profitable revenue sources. Leveraging wireless technology to provide broadband data and voice services allows operators to extend their reach to new residential and business customers in the last mile.

Alvarion’s carrier solutions require minimal initial investments and provide fast roll-out, allowing carriers to achieve immediate customer revenues – a major factor in implementing a successful business strategy in the current market. Through reduced installation costs, expedited network deployment and the use of standard IP-based components, Alvarion products deliver carriers a fast return on investment and enable them to build a profitable and sustainable business in every market segment.

With its vast, proven R&D experience and scores of successful deployments worldwide, Alvarion offers carriers a superior BWA alternative that is secure, consistently reliable and affordable. The company has three product lines suitable for carrier deployments in licensed frequency bands:

  • BreezeACCESS XL operates in the licensed 3.5, 3.8 and 2.6 GHz bands – licensed in many countries outside the US.

  • WALKair products operate in the 3.5 GHz, 10.5 GHz (WALKair 1000) and 26 GHz bands (WALKair 1000 and WALKair 3000) – licensed in many countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. In addition to supporting IP-enabled voice and data applications, WALKair is also ideal for cellular telephony base station feeding applications, providing the E1 links required to connect cellular telephony base stations to a central site. Delivering a high speed of up to 34 mbps per user, the WALKair 3000 offers full integration and complete backwards compatibility with the WALKair 1000 for enhanced coverage, capacity and services.

  • BreezeACCESS MMDS operates in the licensed Multi-channel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) band, operating at 2.5 GHz – licensed in the US and other countries.

Alvarion has unveiled AlvariBase, an enhanced base station solution in the 3.5GHz band that supports both BreezACCESS and WALKair CPEs. The integrated unit will allow operators to address a wide variety of end users, from residential and SOHO, through SMEs, MDUs and MTUs from a single deployment. BWA Carrier Solutions for Residential Customers

Broadband Wireless Access is a clear choice for carriers planning to deliver voice and broadband data services to residential customers.

With wireless, competitive carriers planning mass residential deployments are not encumbered by DSL's unbundling issues and collocation charges, and can keep the entire revenue pie. Initial deployments covering large areas can be achieved quickly and at low cost. Capacity can be added as customers come on line, with revenue generation from every additional investment.

Incumbent carriers can use Broadband Wireless Access as a complement to wire-line broadband technologies. DSL technologies are most often unable to reach significant portions of residential customers. Carriers can use wireless technology to reach such customers, increasing revenue and overall customer satisfaction.

Alvarion's BreezeACCESS Broadband Wireless Access solutions operate in the MMDS and 3.5GHz licensed bands and are ideal for carriers targeting broadband data and high quality voice services at residential customers. BreezeACCESS systems allow carriers to offer high speed Internet access and telephony services. With 3Mbits/second of throughput per customer, H.323 Voice over IP telephony and myriad service provisioning features, BreezeACCESS maximizes the revenue potential of each and every subscriber.

Alvarion's BreezeACCESS enables carriers to provide differentiated services, with CIR & MIR, delivers secure VPNs using standard 802.1Q VLANs and supports easy provisioning with PPPoE. Security is assured with RC4 Wired Equivalent Privacy while accounting services can easily be implemented using the RADIUS clients built-into the BreezeACCESS solutions. BreezeACCESS networks allow traffic prioritization with 802.1p and IP ToS, ensuring high quality end-to-end delivery of delay sensitive traffic, such as voice and video.

Alvarion's BreezeACCESS solutions are implemented as a cellular infrastructure, similar to mobile telephony networks. Base stations are deployed to provide radio coverage to the targeted area, and frequency channels are reused in non-adjacent base station sectors, making most efficient use of available spectrum. Base stations are connected to the carrier central office or PoP using wired or wireless point-to-point solutions. The entire BWA network is connected to the carrier data backbone, the Internet and the PSTN.

Subscribers are provided with customer premises equipment (CPE). CPEs come in two configurations: 1. A fully indoor unit with integral antennas or a detached patch antenna that is placed on a window. 2. A two-piece unit consisting of an outdoor unit with the radio and antenna, connected to an indoor unit, which supplies it with power and communications via a single cable. In both cases, the CPE receives power and presents Ethernet and POTS telephony ports to the user.

The BreezeACCESS residential solution implements Voice over IP using standard H.323. Each telephony equipped residential CPE is capable of translating between analogue voice and signaling on the POTS and H.323 on the packet network. Voice traffic is prioritized on the network and in the air to ensure limited delay and jitter, and thus high quality. BreezeACCESS systems support supplementary features such as call forward and three party conferencing when deployed in conjunction with V5.2 or GR303 gateways.

Alvarion's BreezeACCESS systems are inexpensive, easy to install and virtually maintenance free. BreezeACCESS lowers overall capital and operational costs by using standard Ethernet data communications protocols and interfaces, making use of low-cost components and connecting to inexpensive, easily managed complementary equipment such as switches and routers.

Alvarion BWA solutions feature comprehensive network management, integrated into the leading network management platforms, including HP OpenView and Castle-Rock SNMPC.

Mobile Telephony Base Station Feeding

With the leveling off of voice service revenue, and the introduction of data services, mobile operators are searching for ways to reduce operating costs. Mobile telephone base stations are often backhauled using leased lines or expensive point-to-point wireless links, which form a significant portion of the mobile operator’s cost structure. Alvarion’s WALKair point to multipoint broadband wireless access systems represent a cost-effective alternative which can reduce capital and operating expenses and increase the bandwidth available for voice and data services. WALKair systems provide effective backhaul for GSM and other 2nd generation systems, GPRS (2.5G) and, when deployed, UMTS (3G) systems.

WALKair offers significant operational cost savings over leased lines and is much less expensive than point-to-point alternatives. Its modular architecture requires a small initial investment and features simple, fast and non service interrupting upgrades upon capacity growth or site addition.

WALKair systems allow very high voice and data backhaul capacity, enabled by the high spectral efficiency of the WALKair radio interface. And spare capacity can also be used for Broadband Wireless Access applications, providing services to business customers.

WALKair is designed to meet the requirements of mobile base station backhaul applications. WALKair systems exhibit extremely high reliability, allow for link redundancy and diversity and provide the interfaces required by cellular telephony network. Walkair allows a simple backhaul structure, with a large coverage area and flexible bandwidth support – symmetric and asymmetric – from N x 64K fractional E1 to multiple E1. WALKair features simple installation and easy network planning, and provides transparent access for all traffic and signaling types.

Implementation of a mobile base station feeding solution is as simple as installing a WALKair Terminal Station at each mobile base station, and a WALKair Base Station at a central site, a cellular operator PoP, base station controller or where access to the high-speed network is available. Each mobile base station is allocated n x 64kbps fractional E1s or, two or even four full E1s. The WALKair base station aggregates the traffic of all mobile base stations and connects to the operator backbone via multiple E1 links.

Alvarion Integrated Base Station

Getting the Best of Both Worlds

Alvarion’s WALKair and BreezeACCESS solutions deliver the industry’s most comprehensive set of Broadband Wireless Access Solutions. The Alvarion BreezeACCESS system delivers fast packet data and high quality Voice over IP telephony services, making BWA deployment quick, simple and cost effective. Alvarion’s WALKair systems deliver carrier class TDM services as well as ultra-highly-efficient IP connectivity.

Carriers entering a market typically focus on a specific set of customers for their offering, optimizing operations and network designs accordingly. Similarly, BWA products are, too, focused on a target set of end-users. Operators targeting residential or small business customers for Internet access and VPN, as well as POTS voice typically deploy BreezeACCESS systems. When targeting small to medium businesses that require PBX connectivity, legacy data interfaces (Frame relay, E1, V.35/X.21) as well as IP data, WALKair systems are usually the choice.

Recent economic changes have, however, created an environment in which the customer base of any one-market segment may be insufficient for a successful business case. The need to enlarge the potential revenue dictate approaches at widening the range of current BWA systems.

To address this need, Alvarion has introduced the Integrated WALKair BreezeACCESS base station. The integrated base station is a solution that enables operators to create a BWA system that provides both BreezeACCESS and WALKair services in a coverage area using a single infrastructure. The integrated base station allows WALKair and BreezeACCESS CPEs to be connected wirelessly to the same base station, with the same antennas and outdoor radio units. It leverages the WALKair’s ability to support up to eight carriers on a single outdoor unit (RFU) and antenna, allowing one of these to be a BreezeACCESS carrier.

The Integrated Base Station product is a BreezeACCESS base station, with the standard base station shelf (BS-SH) and modified Access Units, which provide a WALKair IF interface output. The modified Access Units fit into a standard BreezeACCESS base station shelf slot, and are powered by the same base station power supplies (AC or DC). The shelf is collocated in a rack with the WALKair base station BS-BUs. Each Access Unit is connected via a short cable to the appropriate WALKair IFMUX port. The Integrated base station uses the same outdoor units (RFU) and antenna as the BS-BU. The result is that BreezeACCESS carriers can be added to a WALKair base station, without the need to add outdoor units or antennas. No outdoor work needs to be done!

Alvarion’s Integrated WALKair BreezeACCESS base station can be used with both BreezeACCESS and WALKair CPEs. This allows operators to address a wide variety of end users, from residential and SOHO, through SME, MDU and MTU from a single deployment, providing myriad service options, including Internet access, VPNs, Legacy TDM services and PBX connectivity. Any combination of BreezeACCESS and WALKair systems in up to eight carriers is possible with a single outdoor unit and antenna set.

Alvarion’s Integrated Base Station operates in the 3.5GHz licensed frequency band.

With Alvarion’s Integrated Base Station, carriers can have the best of both worlds, addressing more customers with more services, and thus collecting more revenue.
