While Media Converters are considered part ofthe cable plant, in many cases they must beremotely managed as any other network device.In particular this is true in mission-critical, fullymanaged networks as well as in networksdispersed over large areas to allow efficient controland maintenance. The S.CON1M is the onlycompact SNMP managed Media Converteravailable in the market. While vendors offer suchfeature for modular systems only, the need formanagement is more intense in single channeldevices, being deployed away from the mainwiring closets. This compact size device implements theinnovative BMD (Buffered Media Domain)technology to provide an unconditioned networkextension of up to 150km, in any networkarchitecture (even when such includes repeaters).Its copper port is auto-negotiating to provideeasy migration from 10Mbps to 100Mbpstransmission rates. A switch selectable VLANallows choice of in-band (over the fibre)management or locally accessible (via the TPport) management. Special attention was givento allow easy installation and maintenance: MDIII/MDI-X switch to eliminate crossed cables,internal quality power-supply, extensive frontpaneldiagnostics and more. A powerful selectivefault propagation mechanism facilitates theinitiation of a redundant path to critical sites. Incase that more than one device must be installedin a wiring center, a special 19" shelf is availablefor easy and safe installation while occupyingminimal rack-space.
