IAD'sVoice and data convergence for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)Carriers, both incumbent and alternative, are searching for ways to provide quality voice, data and other services to customers at competitive prices, without investing enormous amounts of money in new infrastructure. In particular, finding new ways of providing services to a large market of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) is a necessity for competing in today's telecom marketplace. Carriers using IADs can offer several revenue-generating services: VoDSL - With high speed transmission at relatively low cost, DSL has proven to be a reliable technology for carriers wishing to provide SMEs services such as Internet access and remote LAN connectivity. Voice over DSL technology enables these carriers to diversify services by bundling voice and data over their leased copper lines. This increases profitability and creates new revenues due to the extra business generated by converged services. Leased Line - When carriers use TDM networks for n x 64 kbps leased line service, they invest in expensive multiplexing and termination equipment at the central office and customer premises, respectively. They also waste bandwidth that is reserved for each customer. The proliferation of ATM transport and backbone networks and the growing deployment of high speed ADSL for Internet access offer carriers the opportunity to leverage their ATM infrastructure to deliver integrated leased line services. With so many ATM-based DSLAMs out in the field, carriers can sell additional services over the lower speed DSL loops. Cellular - Next generation cellular networks also require ATM network capabilities. RAD's IADs can transport cellular traffic over the DSL network to the ATM backbone. Carriers with deployed DSL networks will be able to increase revenues by selling transport services to cellular operators (backhauling). DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM) The DSLAM provides two functions:
The Voice gateway converts ATM-based voice traffic to circuit-based voice traffic and vice versa. It also provides ATM routing, call control signalling with the IADs and line concentration towards the class 5 switch (GR-303 or V5.2). IADs with VoDSL technology feature a router to connect to LANs (for data traffic) and multiple phone jacks to connect to POTS, ISDN or a PBX (for voice traffic). The IAD packetizes the voice traffic and passes it over ATM over the DSL line. Data is then sent to the ISP, while voice is sent to the voice gateway. Unlike TDM-based services which are channelised, DSL access networks are packet-based, allowing VoDSL solutions to use bandwidth dynamically. Carriers can therefore maximize the potential of each DSL connection. The IADs guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) by giving telephony packets priority over data packets. This means that telephony traffic always receives the bandwidth it needs and data traffic uses the remaining bandwidth. In addition, telephone features and functionality are entirely maintained, as DSL can support services such as call waiting, caller ID and call forwarding.
